In India, Republic Day honors the date which the Constitution of India came into force replacing the Government of India Act (1935) as India's ruling document.
The Constituent Assembly passed the Constitution on 26 November 1949 but was embraced using a government system that was democratic, finishing the transition of the country's toward becoming a completely independent republic. 26 January was chosen for this particular goal as it was this day when the Declaration of Indian Independence (Purna Swaraj) proclaimed by the Indian National Congress.
It's but one of three national holidays other two being Gandhi Jayanti and Independence Day.
